ARBH are delighted to visit Crete for the first time for our summer bridge holiday: known as Zeus’ birthplace, the island is full of hidden gems, rich history, rugged natural landscapes and a wealth of authentic places for curious travellers to explore.

We will stay at the luxurious 5* Porto Elounda Hotel, where luxury meets the greens of Crete’s stunning landscape. Nestled along the pristine shores of Mirabello Bay, Porto Elounda invites you to indulge in the epitome of Cretan hospitality. The hotel has a private sandy beach

Porto Elounda has embarked on a transformative journey, entering a new era of luxury and sophistication. In 2024 the hotel has created 48 new suites, alongside the revamped pool, gym and beach areas. Hotel website: www.portoelounda.com/en/ The average temperature for September is 24C.

Leisure facilities: there is a complex of swimming pools including the largest seafront pool in Crete, spanning 420 square metres, an indoor pool, sauna and gym. There is a wellness centre and spa which offers a variety of facial, beauty and body treatments, yoga, massages and therapies. It is advised to pre-book these treatments to avoid disappointment.

Golf: the hotel has a private 9-hole par 3 course and just 30 minutes away is the Crete Golf Club, an 18-hole championship course nestled in a mountain-style layout. I will be on for a round or two so bring your golf shoes if you would like to join me!

As ever, we will organise two interesting and cultural excursions:

Excursion 1- Cruise to Spinalonga Island

Embark on a journey to discover the beauty and history of Spinalonga Island, guided by experienced professionals who will lead you through the fascinating remnants of this Venetian fortress. Once a thriving community and later a leper colony, Spinalonga offers a unique glimpse into Greece’s cultural and architectural heritage. The island’s imposing fortifications, serene surroundings, and historical significance make it an unforgettable stop.

Following our exploration of Spinalonga, we will set sail across the shimmering waters of the Gulf of Elounda towards the tranquil Kolokytha Bay. Here, surrounded by the lush Mediterranean landscape, you will enjoy a light lunch of delectable finger foods, specially prepared to complement the relaxing atmosphere. Afterward, take the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear waters

Excursion 2 – Elaphite Panagia Kera Church, Kritsa Village and Olive Oil Tasting

Set off on a scenic excursion to explore the rich history and culture of Crete. Our first stop is the Panagia Kera Church, a Byzantine gem known for its remarkable 13th-century frescoes,

We then continue to the traditional village of Kritsa, one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in Crete. Wander through its narrow, winding streets lined with charming, whitewashed houses and local artisan shops,

Following our visit, we’ll head to a restaurant above the lake of Agios Nikolaos, where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch featuring traditional Cretan dishes, all while taking in breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Our journey concludes with a visit to a local olive oil farm, where you’ll enjoy a tasting of high-quality olive oils, each with distinct flavors  that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.

There will be an informative and fun Bridge programme led by Jack Stocken who will teach Andrew Robson’s lessons on four mornings, gentle Duplicate before dinner and relaxed supervised play after dinner. Note that our holidays are not suitable for those who are used to a competitive 24 board club duplicate.

Paddy Buckley and Helena Gaynor will co-host the first week, Suzi McArthur and Grazyna Wrobel the second week. Book your own flights with British Airways from Gatwick and we will organise a coach transfer to/from the hotel for a small fee. Most other airlines fly to Dubrovnik and BA fly from Heathrow on a Saturday.
